Lesson Ten: The Charge to Faithful Ministry

1) GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER

2) READ / LISTEN to 2nd Timothy 4:1-22
A) What are your initial impressions? Questions?
i) Are there notable differences in various translations?

3) LOVE’S LAST APPEAL (4:1-8)
A) (vs. 1) What two points of authority does Paul reference in his charge to Timothy?

B) (vs. 2) Top Priorities:
i) Preach the Word!
ii) Be Ready at all Times
iii) Persuade with Conviction – addresses the intellect
iv) Rebuke! (for confession AND pardon) – confronts the emotion
v) Exhort! (for encouragement and comfort) – appeals to the will
(1) parakalew = parakaleo (Jesus used this word of the Holy Spirit)

C) (vv. 3-4) The majority response to sound doctrine.
i) Timothy’s current situation at Ephesus – nothing new under the sun. (Isaiah 30:9-11)

D) (vs. 5) How Timothy should respond.

E) (vv. 6-8) Paul’s Example and Promise
i) What 3 statements does Paul offer as a testament to his life?
ii) What hope does Paul have for himself and all other faithful Christians?

5) APPLICATION
A) A true follower of Christ is evident by their faithfulness and endurance in all situations. (1st Peter 4:19)

B) Every person by their actions (or inactions) either strengthens the church and its ministries, or weakens them. There is no neutral ground. (Revelation 3:14-16)

C) What ways are we swayed by the cultural “pied piper” lure of tolerance, relativism, environmental issues, universalism, or the promise of wealth? (James 4:4; 1st John 2:15)

D) What can you do to strengthen (embolden) your faith witness? (2nd Timothy 1:7)
