4) HERITAGE IN CHRIST (1:1-5)
A) CristoV IhsouV = “Christ Jesus” used 12 times in 2nd Timothy
i) (6 in first chapter alone - vv. 1, 2, 9, 10, 13; see also 2:1, 3, 10; 3:12, 15; 4:1)

B) (vv. 3-5) Paul’s characteristic “one sentence.”
i) What is Paul thankful to God for?
ii) What circumstances brought about Timothy’s tears?
iii) What is significant about Timothy’s Christian heritage? (Acts 16:1-3)

5) THE POWER OF GOD (1:6-7)
A) A Burning gift from God. How can Timothy keep fired up for God?

B) The Spirit of a Christian
i) NOT Δειλίας (deilias) = timidity or cowardice. The word is used in non-biblical literature to describe someone retreating from battle. (RRV – God has given us a bold spirit of no retreat.)
ii) Δυνάμεως (dynameos) = power. We get the word, dynamo from this word.
iii) ἀγάπης (agapes) = unconditional love. The kind of love God demonstrated to us.
iv) σωφρονισμοῦ (sophronismou) = prudent behavior, sound reasoning.

6) THE BELIEVER’S CONFIDENCE AND IDENTITY (1:8-12)
A) (vv. 8-11) Again, one sentence in the Greek.

B) (vs. 8) What is Timothy not to be ashamed of? What should he do instead?

C) (vv. 9-10) The Gospel in a nutshell:
i) He has saved us (God has done it! Contrast every other religion)
ii) Called us to a holy calling
iii) His grace – not our works (John 1:14)
iv) Victorious over death – made it ineffective (like a bee without the stinger)

D) (vv. 11-12) What is Paul’s confidence?

7) PAUL’S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY (1:13-14)
A) What is Timothy to hold fast to?

B) What is he to guard against? How?

8) GOOD AND BAD EXAMPLES of “Church Folk” (1:15-18)
A) Compare vs. 15 with Acts 19:8-12

B) (vs. 16-17) Onesiphorus not Onesimus (see Philemon)
i) Name means “beneficial” or “bringing profit”
ii) What sets him apart for mention from Paul?
iii) Onesiphorus may have martyred by being torn apart by horses
