5) SPECIAL COUNSEL REGARDING ELDERS (5:17-25)
A) (vv. 17-18) They are to be paid, especially those who preach and teach the Word
i) Deuteronomy 25:4; 1st Corinthians 9:3-14; Matt. 10:10; Luke 10:7
ii) What does Paul mean by “scripture” in verse 18? (Luke was written after 1st Timothy.)
B) (vs. 19) They are to be protected from false accusations
i) Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15; Matthew 18:16; 2nd Corinthians 13:1
C) (vs. 20) They are accountable to the church. (see Galatians 2:11-14)
D) (vv. 21-25) Personal counsel to Timothy.
6) APPLICATION
A) The church should take care of the needy in our church and society who have no other means of support. Who are these people?
B) The church should pay their pastors fairly and give special honor (double pay?) to those who preach and teach the Word.
C) We should not give in to the temptation to pass along accusations (gossip) about a church leader if we are unable or unwilling to determine that the source is not from two or more reliable witnesses.
