Lesson Two: Orderly Worship

1) GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER

2) READ / LISTEN to 1st Timothy 2:1-15
A) What are your initial impressions? Questions?
i) Are there notable differences in various translations?

3) THE FIRST ORDER OF THE CHURCH (2:1-7)
A) Praying for everyone, everywhere (vv. 1-4)
i) (vv. 1-2a) Circle One (our prayers) and Circle Two (God’s will)

ii) (vv. 2b-4) Three reasons why we pray

B) The true confession (vv. 5-6)
i) One True God

ii) Only One Mediator – an antilutron an-til'-oo-tron (ransom for a slave)

iii) A timely Testimony

C) An appointment to faith and truth (v. 7)
i) What 3 things is Paul appointed to?

ii) 3 part TRUTH of Paul’s message to Timothy:
(1) All Truth comes from God
(2) Salvation is available to All
(3) The Church and Faithful Christians are God’s means to spread the message of truth and salvation to all people.

4) CALLING MEN & WOMEN TO ORDERLY WORSHIP (2:8-15)
A) Instructions for Men
i) (vs. 8) see Psalm 24:3-4; 1st Timothy 3:6; 5:22

B) Now, the Womenfolk. (vv. 9-15)
i) Ground rules:
(1) View in light of other Scripture – especially Paul’s writings.
(2) Distinguish between sitz im leben and universal application (example: turning water into wine)
(3) Passage must be understood in its cultural setting
ii) Scriptural understanding:
(1) Paul’s other letters - Galatians 3:24-29; Romans 5:12-21; Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19
(2) Peter’s letter - 1st Peter 3:1-9
(3) Elsewhere in Paul’s ministry about women – Acts 18:24-28; Romans 16:1, 6, 12; Phil. 4:2-3

iii) Situation in Life and in the Culture
(1) Paul’s ministry was actually liberating for women and some took that to the extreme.
(2) Ephesus was home to the Temple of Artemis - the goddess of fertility. Many temple prostitutes were part of it. They were known for long, disheveled hair and adorned themselves in jewelry and fine clothes.
(3) Paul is comparing and contrasting the present situation in Ephesus with Adam and Eve in the Garden (Genesis 3).

iv) Now, instructions for women (vv. 9-15)
(1) (vv. 9-10) Don’t be confused with a temple prostitute.
(2) (vv. 11-12) Paul does not insist women are quiet everywhere – just as it relates to authority over men in the church. Paul is consistent with the Jewish Rabbinic code of the day. Also, this is the order that God set forth from the time of Eden.
(3) (vs. 14) Paul knows that Adam sinned as well. He uses the Genesis account to illustrate that as the woman was first deceived by the serpent, there is a concern that the women in Ephesus could be deceived from the cults and false teaching arising in the church.
(4) (vs. 15) Your guess is as good as mine. I’ll humbly give you my take on it.

5) APPLICATION
A) God wants us to pray. (Philippians 4:6-7)

B) God wants all to be saved. (Ezekiel 33:11; 2nd Peter 3:9)

C) God wants men and women to put Him first by submitting to God’s authority in their Christian identity. (Galatians 2:20; 5:24)

6) WRAP UP and CLOSE IN PRAYER
