3) COURSE OBJECTIVES
i) To Glorify God in our study of His Word.
ii) To edify our own knowledge and understanding.
iii) To Study Paul’s writings to individuals in their unique church settings.

v) To be blessed by the Holy Spirit in our Study.

4) GENERAL OVERVIEW FOR 1ST TIMOTHY
A) Authorship – The Apostle Paul, ~64 A.D.

B) Recipient - Timothy, Paul’s son in the faith

C) Occasion and purpose of the letter
i) Encourage Timothy to stay in Ephesus
ii) Authoritative Instruction
iii) Equip Timothy (and the church) to Counter opposition and false teaching
iv) To instruct and encourage Timothy in his conduct

D) Major Themes in 1st Timothy
i) Paul’s concern for the Truth of the Gospel (sound doctrine)
ii) Holiness as it relates to the Christian Life
iii) Church Government – Specifically the church in Ephesus

6) THE GREETING (1:1-2)
A) Apostle Under the Command of God (compare with 2nd Timothy 1 and Titus 1 and Paul’s other letters)

B) The Deity of Christ (see also Luke 8:39)

7) THE EPHESIAN PROBLEM (1:3-7)
A) (vv. 3-4) Timothy urged to remain
i) Not all “truth” is true

B) (vs. 5) The goal is love (3-fold)

C) (vv. 6-7) What the false teachers taught (in a particularly Jewish setting):
i) Fables and genealogies (1:4-7; 4:7)
ii) Rigid asceticism (4:3,8) Renouncing marriage and abstain from some foods
iii) Special knowledge (6:20-21)

D) FAITH comes through hearing (Romans 10:17)

8) THE PURPOSE OF THE LAW AND THE GOSPEL (1:8-11)
A) (vv. 8-9) The Law reveals sin (Romans 3:10, 20)
i) Three major groups of people

B) (vs. 10) The Law compares God’s standard to those who think they are okay
i) Paul is specific listing behavior that is the antithesis of Exodus 20:12-16

C) (vs 11) The gospel reveals a loving, forgiving, transforming God (1st Cor. 6:9-11; 2nd Cor. 5:17)

9) MARVELOUS GRACE (1:12-17)
A) (vv. 12-14) Paul’s personal testimony (see also Acts 7:57- 8:3; Acts 9)

B) (vv. 15-16) pistos o logos = trustworthy is the saying
i) see 1st Timothy 1:15; 3:1; 4:9-10; 2nd Timothy 2:11-13; Titus 3:5-8
ii) Jesus came to save sinners! (Matthew 1:21; Mark 2:17; Romans 5:8)

C) (vs. 17) Glory to God!

10) ENCOURAGEMENT TO FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT (1:18-20)
A) (vs. 18) Fight the good fight, Tim, with faith and good conscience

B) (vv. 19-20) Excommunication for the goal of redemption. (See 1st Corinthians 5:1-5)

11) APPLICATION
A) We must content for the faith. The church gives power to Satan when we adopt the cultural norms and forsake the Word of God. (Romans 12:2)

B) Spiritual Truth comes from God’s Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit – not from human “wisdom.” (1st Corinthians 1:25)

C) We should be motivated by love for God and neighbor. (Matthew 22:37-39)
