The Belt of Truth - #2 of 7
Ephesians 6:13-14 - Victory Fellowship
August 17, 2025 - Rev. Roderick Grabski
I. Introduction:
a. This week our focus in on what it means to put on the Belt of Truth.
b. People seem to want to know the truth. We say, “Can I be truthful with you?” or “To be honest”
i. If we have to ask, it suggests that maybe people don’t always want to know the truth
c. It’s been said that “people are searching for the truth.” Maybe they are just searching for a “truth” they can agree with.
d. The 9th Commandment: Do Not Give False Testimony Matt 5:37
e. Even Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, “What is truth?”
John 18:37-38 Pilate therefore said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate *said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and *said to them, "I find no guilt in Him.
f. If a person really wants to know and abide in the truth, they will change their habits and behavior when they learn that they are living inconsistent with the truth.
i. Another word for that is REPENTANCE.
g. You see, everything hinges on the truth. Jesus said,
“…If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31b-32)
II. RELATING THE TEXT:
a. The belt of truth – some translations say to “gird your loins” (NASB, KJV, RSV, ASV)
i. Perhaps you thought about “girdle.”
b. The belt of the armor was an apron, girdle type garment (usually leather) that protected the lower area (loins) of the body. It was the first layer of protection that held all others together. It also held the sword.
c. Unlike the sword, however, the belt of truth is a DEFENSIVE piece of the armor – meant to protect the wearer against an attack (Jesus tempted Luke 4)
III. APPLICATION:
a. Satan hits below the belt. Where your commitment level is the weakest. Jesus told the Pharisees,
"Why do you not understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot hear My word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature; for he is a liar, and the father of lies. But because I speak the truth, you do not believe Me.” (John 8:43-45)
b. You don’t have to fear a spiritual battle or a demonic attack if you wear the belt of truth. The biggest weapon a demon or the devil has in their arsenal is their lying mouth. You defeat lies with the TRUTH.
c. Therefore, the metaphor of putting on the Belt of Truth means filtering everything in your life and experience through a worldview based on God’s truth and the truth of His Word. It involves accepting the Bible as true and changing your life to align with its instruction.
IV. There are four major ideals that we commit to when we put on the belt of truth:
i. Jesus is the ESSENCE of TRUTH (John 14:6)
ii. SCRIPTURE is the WORD of TRUTH
Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
iii. The HOLY SPIRIT is the PERSON of TRUTH
John 14:16-17 "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you, and will be in you.
1. The Holy Spirit will led us to develop beliefs, actions, and attitudes consistent with the TRUTH.
iv. The CHURCH is the PILLAR and FOUNDATION of TRUTH
1 Timothy 3:14-15 but in case I am delayed, I write so that you may know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
V. CONCLUSION:
a. The Truth is - Everything does hinge on the truth.
b. If we fail to put on the belt of truth, none of the other 5 pieces of the armor will be as effective and, in fact, will ultimately fail.
c. The truth is what we stand on. If we don’t stand for something, we will fall for anything. Truth be told, we need to put on the Belt of Truth every day.
PRAYER
SONG: Truth Be Told
Ephesians 6:13-14 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness.
