i.    It answers the question about who would care for the disciples after Jesus was no longer physically present.
ii.    It brings closure to Peter’s situation.
iii.    It addresses a false rumor that John would not die until the Lord returned.
iv.    It explains why John did not include other signs Jesus performed. (20:30)
v.    It addresses the disciples’ future protection now without their Master.
vi.    It reinforces the truth that the “disciple whom Jesus loved” is John.
1.    A son of Zebedee, younger brother of James, son of Salome (compare Mark 15:40 with Matthew 27:56) who may have been Mary’s sister (John 19:25).
vii.    It balances the structure of the Gospel with the Prologue of John 1:1-18.

IV.    "Déjà Vu” All Over Again (vv. 1-14)
a.    (vs. 1) The Sea of Tiberius was better known as the Sea of Galilee. It was also called the Sea of Chinnereth (Num. 34:11; Josh. 13:27), or the Sea of Chinneroth (Josh. 12:3), and the Lake of Gennesaret (Luke 5:1).

b.    (vv. 2-3) The disciples were not where Jesus told them to be. (Matt. 28:16)

V.    Jesus Restores Peter (vv. 15-19)
a.    (vv. 15-16) Jesus uses the Greek word, agapaw (agapao), for love, and Peter responds with the Greek word, filew (phileo), for love.

b.    (vs. 17) Jesus and Peter use the Greek word, filew (phileo), for love.

c.    (vs. 18-19) Peter’s commissioning.

b.    (vs. 23) Point of clarification.

VII.    John’s Identity (vv. 24-25)
a.    John reveals his identity and his testimony.

b.    That’s a lot of books!

VIII.    Application
a.    We are never too far from God that He won’t offer love and restoration. (Romans 7:24-25a; 1st Timothy 1:12-16)

b.    Believers are part of Jesus’ divine plan for forgiving sin by proclaiming His salvation to the repentant and God’s judgment to the indignant. (Matthew 18:18; Acts 2:38-39)
