I.    ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS

II.    Read / Listen to John 20:1-31
a.    What are your initial impressions or Notable translation differences?

III.    The Tomb is Empty! (vv. 1-10)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8 (9-13); Luke 24:1-11
ii.    The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9–20.

b.    See Resurrection Morning 

c.    This was Sunday morning. What was significant about to position of the linen cloths and the head wrapping?

d.    What disciple reached the tomb first? What did he believe?

IV.    The Risen Lord Appears to Mary Magdalene (vv. 11-18)
a.    Why was Mary crying?

b.    Proverbs 8:17

c.    (vv. 14-16) Why do you suppose Mary did not recognize Jesus?

d.    (vs. 17) What does Jesus mean by “I have not yet ascended to the Father?”

e.    What does Jesus mean by “My Father and your Father, My God and your God?”

V.    Jesus Appears to the Ten Disciples (vv. 19-23)
a.    Compare with Luke 24:36-43

b.    (vv. 19-20) Why does Jesus show them His wounds?

c.    (vv. 21-23) This is John’s version of the Great Commission. 

d.    Compare the Gospel Accounts of the Great Commission:
i.    Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:14-20; Luke 24:1-11

e.    Jesus delegates the authority for believers to pronounce someone is forgiven or not forgiven based on their response to the gospel.
VI.    Jesus Appears to Thomas and the Ten (vv. 24-29)
a.    See Resurrection Appearances 
i.    Also to Stephen in Acts 7:55-56 and Saul in Acts 9:3-6

b.    (vs. 28-29) Despite what he claimed in verse 25, Thomas’ great testimony did not come from touching Jesus, but rather from seeing Him resurrected.

VII.    The Purpose of John’s Gospel (vv. 30-31)
a.    What point is John making in verse 30?

b.    Verse 31 is the theme for the entire Gospel of John.

VIII.    Application
a.    It is extremely inconsistent to believe in the Jesus of the Bible without believing in His bodily resurrection. To reject His resurrection is to reject true Christianity. (1 Corinthians 15:12-19)

b.    Christ crucified, dead, buried, and resurrected has given those who believe new life, and victory over sin and death.            (Romans 10:9; 1 Corinthians 15:55-57)
