CLASS NINETEEN: The Real Lord’s Prayer
I. ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS
II. Read / Listen to John 17:1-26
a. What are your initial impressions or Notable translation differences?
III. Jesus Prays for Himself (vv. 1-5)
a. This chapter is more appropriately “The Lord’s Prayer.” What is recorded in Matthew 6:9-16 and Luke 11:2-4 is a pattern of prayer Jesus taught His disciples. It would be more fitting to call it the Disciples Prayer. Jesus would not pray that prayer – He didn’t need to be forgiven of sins.
b. (vs. 1) Jesus demonstrates that it is entirely appropriate to pray for oneself. What is His prominent request? Based on Isaiah 42:8 and 48:11, what does Jesus’ request reveal?
c. (vs. 2) Notice that Jesus speaks in the third person. What authority has He been given? (Note Matthew 28:18)
d. (vs. 3) What is eternal life? John uses the full name Jesus Christ only here and in 1:17.
e. (vs. 4) How has Jesus glorified the Father on Earth?
f. (vs. 5) What is Jesus asking of the Father?
IV. Jesus Prays for His Disciples (vv. 6-19)
a. (vs. 6) Here Jesus transitions from praying for Himself to interceding for His disciples.
b. (vv. 7-8) What does Jesus tell God the Father that His disciples know and believe?
c. (vv. 9-10) Who, specifically, is Jesus praying for? Who is He not praying for?
d. (vv. 11-12) What is Jesus asking the Father to do? This is the only place in the bible that the name, Holy Father, is used.
e. Remember that Judas’ betrayal was a fulfilment of Psalm 41:9.
f. (vv. 13-16) What is the relationship that Jesus, God the Father, and believers have with the world?
g. The Father’s protection of the disciples was essential in order for them to be glorified and to secure their unity with one another. This is true of all Christians.
h. (vv. 17-19) God’s Word and Truth are synonymous. Jesus is referring to not just His Words (red letter), but the entire bible. (John 1:1-3)
V. Jesus Prays for All Believers (vv. 20-26)
a. (vs. 20) Jesus transitions from praying for His disciples to praying for all Christians anywhere and at any time in history. This high holy prayer gives us an opportunity to eavesdrop on the Lord God’s prayer for US!
b. (vv. 21-23) What does Jesus want for all Christians?
c. By the Holy Spirit, God creates a supernatural unity of His universal church that is preserved by believers. (Ephesians 4:1-6)
d. Jesus’ prayer reveals that He and the Father are united in five ways:
i. In Motive – they are equally committed to the glory of God.
ii. In Mission – they share the goal of redeeming lost sinners into eternal life.
iii. In Truth – proclaiming the truth of God’s word.
iv. In Holiness – Hebrews 12:14
v. In Love – 1st John 4:7-11
e. (vs. 24) What exactly is Jesus asking for?
f. (vv. 25-26) Even with the cross looming before Him, Jesus acknowledges that God is a Righteous Father.
VI. Application
a. The more we study God’s Word, the more we need to love Jesus as we learn all that He has done for us. The Word gives us joy, love, and power to live a holy life and serve Him as witnesses to the world. (Acts 1:8; Colossians 3:16; 1st John 4:16)
b. The ultimate purpose and goal of every Christian is to bring glory to God. (1st Corinthians 10:31; Colossians 3:17)
c. Not only did Jesus pray for YOU and ME before He went to the cross, He intercedes for us even now at the right hand of God the Father. (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 8:1-2)
