CLASS TWENTY-ONE: The Crucifixion of Jesus 

I.    ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS

II.    Read / Listen to John 19:1-42
a.    What are your initial impressions or Notable translation differences?

III.    Jesus Flogged, Mocked, and Sentenced to Death (vv. 1-16a)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 27:26-31; Mark 15:15-20; Luke 23:24-25

b.    (vv. 1-4) Note that all of this abuse is happening to Jesus and Pilate believes Him to be innocent!

c.    (vv. 5-6) Pilate is sarcastically mocking the Jewish authorities.

d.    (vv. 7-9) Why did Pilate become afraid?

e.    (vv. 10-11) Who has the greater sin than Pilate?

f.    (vv. 12-16a) How do these verses show Pilate is really not in control?

IV.    Jesus is Crucified (vv. 16b-24)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 27:32-44; Mark 15:21-32; Luke 23:26-43

b.    (vv. 16b-18) Skull Place in Hebrew is Golgotha. In Latin, Calvary.

c.    (vv. 19-22) It was customary for a condemned criminal to carry a sign with the inscription of the crime(s) they were being crucified for. What is significant about the sign on Jesus’ cross?

d.    (vv. 23-24) See Psalm 22:6-8, 14-18 and Isaiah 53:1-8.

V.    Jesus Makes Provision for His Mother (vv. 25-27)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 27:55-56; Mark 15:40-41

b.    Comparing all the accounts there were 4 woman and John at the foot of the cross.

c.    Why do you suppose John is the only Gospel writer that records Jesus’ words to Mary and “the disciple Jesus loved?”  

VI.    Jesus’ Work is Finished (vv. 28-30)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 27:45-54; Mark 15:33-39; Luke 23:44-49

b.    (vs. 29) Jesus is given a different drink than what He rejected in Matthew 27:34 and Mark 15:23.

c.    Jesus’ 7 Last Sayings in Scripture:
i.    “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
ii.    “Today you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43)
iii.    “Woman, here is your son. . . . Here is your mother.” (John 19:26-27)
iv.    “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46)
v.    “I am thirsty.” (John 19:28)
vi.    “It is finished.” (John 19:30)
vii.    “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” (Luke 23:46)

d.    Jesus said, “Τετέλεσται” (Tetelestai). It means: “It is finished, it stands finished, and it will always be finished!” Used in a business setting with merchants this word means, “The debt is paid in full.” 

VII.    They Pierce His Side (vv. 31-37)
a.    The soldiers did not do what they were ordered to do, and they did do what they were not supposed to do – all in order for scripture to be fulfilled. The bones of the Passover Lamb were not to be broken (Ex. 12:46; Num. 9:12; Psalm 34:20) and His side is pierced (Zech. 12:10; Rev. 1:7).

VIII.    Jesus’ Burial (vv. 38-42)
a.    Compare the Gospel Accounts and Discuss:
i.    Matthew 27:57-66; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56

b.    Joseph and Nicodemus were silent followers when Jesus was alive, but after His death they became bold disciples.

c.    See Isaiah 53:9-12.

IX.    Application
a.    Despite their appearance of dominance and control, God is Sovereign over the governments of the world. (1st Timothy 6:13-15)

b.    On a daily basis, we should thank God for the sacrifice Jesus made on our behalf. (1st Corinthians 15:57; 2nd Corinthians 5:21)
