CLASS FIFTEEN: Jesus’ Betrayer Revealed
I. ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS
II. Read / Listen to John 13:1-38
a. What are your initial impressions or Notable translation differences?
III. Jesus Washes His Disciple’s Feet (vv. 1-11)
a. Chapters 13-17 are Jesus’ farewell message to His disciples.
b. For a full understanding of this event we need to compare this with Matthew 26:18-20; Mark 14:12-26; and Luke 22:7-27.
c. (vs. 1) Now Jesus’ hour has come. Note the emphasis on LOVE.
d. (vv. 2-3) What’s the difference between verse 2 and verse 27? Remember that despite all he had seen, Judas was always an unbeliever. (John 6:63-71)
e. (vv. 4-11) Only Jesus and the Twelve were in the room for supper. The fact that Jesus got up from the meal to wash their feet means that none of His disciples took it upon themselves to offer this service. (After all, it was a task too menial for even Hebrew slaves.)
f. Discuss the interaction between Simon Peter and Jesus. There is a strong double negative in verse 8.
g. The Greek word translated “wash” in verses 5-6, 8, 12, and 14 means to wash a part of the body. But the Greek word for “washed” in verse 10 means to bathe all over. Jesus is teaching His disciples the importance of a holy life. (1st John 1:9)
IV. Following the Example of Jesus (vv. 12-20)
a. (vv. 12-17) What is the message Jesus gives to His disciples?
b. (vv. 18-20) Jesus is referring to Psalm 41:9 and perhaps even David’s Psalm 55:12-14 (based on David’s experience in 2 Sam. 15)
V. Jesus’ Betrayer Revealed (vv. 21-30)
a. (vs. 21) The Greek word for troubled (tarassw tarasso) is one that expresses anguish, fear, amazement, terror, and/or discouragement. (also 11:33; 12:27) What is it that Jesus is troubled about?
b. (vv. 22-25) Who is the disciple “whom Jesus loved?” (19:26; 20:2; 21:7,20)
c. (vv. 26-27) Now the betrayer is called out to his face.
d. (vv. 28-29) Judas was seated in the place of honor and offering him the bread was interpreted as an act of honor and love. Clearly, only John heard Jesus’ words over the conversation around the table.
e. (vs. 30) This is ominous. Judas flees from the Light of the World into the night of his black heart.
VI. Jesus Gives a New Command (vv. 31-35)
a. (vv. 31-33) How is the Son of Man and God now glorified?
b. (vv. 34-35) What are the ramifications of this for every Christian?
VII. Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denials (vv. 36-38)
a. At this point, Jesus’ words seem cryptic. But what do we know from history and the Word of God about Jesus’ conversation with Peter?
VIII. Application
a. God’s formula for spiritual joy is to submit humbly to God, keep your life clean, and serve others. (Micah 6:8; James 1:27)
b. Two of the best ways to love others is to assume the best and to have a sense of humor. (1st Corinthians 13:4-8a)
c. Two more ways to love each other is to apologize and seek forgiveness, and to offer forgiveness. (Matthew 5:23-24, 6:14-15)
