IV.    “I Am The Good Shepherd” (vv. 11-21)
a.    (vs. 11) Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He is the Great Shepherd (Hebrews 13:20; Psalm 23). He is the Chief Shepherd (1 Peter 5:4).

b.    (vv. 11-13) The Good Shepherd dies for His sheep.
i.    The hireling is in it for the money. (Jeremiah 23:1-6; Ezekiel 34:1-10)

c.    (vv. 14-15) The Good Shepherd knows His sheep and they know Him.

d.    (vs. 16) The Good Shepherd has other sheep to bring into the flock.

e.    (vv. 17-21) The Good Shepherd lays down His life and takes it up again.

V.    “The Father and I Are One” (vv. 22-39)
a.    The festival of Dedication = Hanukkah. (2 Maccabees 10:1-8)
Antiochus IV, inherited the throne in 176 B.C. A brief Jewish rebellion only hardened his views and led him to outlaw central tenets of Judaism such as the Sabbath and circumcision, and defile the holy Temple by erecting an altar to the god Zeus, allowing the sacrifice of pigs, human sacrifices, and opening the shrine to non-Jews. In 164 B.C., Jerusalem was recaptured by the Maccabees and the Temple purified, an event that gave birth to the holiday of Chanukah.
b.    (vv. 23-24) Why are they questioning Jesus this way?
i.    Compare with Luke 22:66-71.

c.    (vv. 25-29) Jesus’ words reveal 6 realities for Christians:
i.    Believers are His sheep and He will protect them.
ii.    Christ’s sheep hear only His voice and follow only Him.
iii.    Christ gives His sheep eternal life 
iv.    Christ promises that His sheep will never perish.
v.    No one can snatch Christ’s sheep from His hand. (Romans 8:38-39)
vi.    Christ’s sheep cannot be snatched from the Father’s hand either.

d.    (vv. 30-33) Why are these words of Jesus so unsettling to them?

e.    (vv. 34-36) Jesus is quoting Psalm 82:6 concerning human judges. What is Jesus’ reasoning?

f.    (vv. 37-39) How do Jesus’ works testify to His origin?

VI.    Many Beyond the Jordan Believe in Jesus (vv. 40-42)
a.    This is the close of Jesus’ public ministry as recorded in the Gospel of John. He will return in about 3 months for the raising of Lazarus and the Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem. 

VII.    Application
a.    Jesus Christ, the Good Shepherd, brings unity and reconciliation with God to both the Jew and Gentile – united in one body as His Holy Church. (1 Corinthians 12:13; Ephesians 2:11-18)

b.    Believers abiding in the sheepfold of Jesus enjoy an abundant life.        (Psalm 23:1; 2 Corinthians 9:10-11; Philippians 4:19)
