Seven Things God Hates
Proverbs 6:16-19 – Victory Fellowship
September 18, 2022 - Rev. Roderick Grabski
I. Introduction:
a. (Hope you hate this sermon)
i. Like exercise and watching your diet
b. God is Love
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
8: 38-39 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
1st John 3:1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed upon us, that we should be called children of God; and [such] we are.
4:10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.
c. God does not hate people. God hates whatever hinders or obstructs the full expression and benefit of His love.
i. Not like an angry mean God, but a God who wants to give us life to the fullest.
d. Therefore, God hates this:
i. Idol Worship
Exodus 20: 3-6 "You shall have no other gods before Me."You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth."You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
ii. Sexual Immorality
1st Cor. 6:9-10-11 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
iii. Cruelty to Children
Matthew 18:5-6 "And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me. But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
iv. Intentional Maliciousness (Prov. 6:16-19)
II. The heart of today’s message: There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him…
a. Haughty Eyes
i. Proud, Arrogant, Window to soul
Haughty Eyes: In 1863 President Lincoln designated April 30th as a day of national humiliation, fasting, and prayer. National humiliation, fasting, and prayer. Let me read a portion of his proclamation on that occasion: "It is the duty of nations, as well as of men, who owe their dependence upon the overruling power of God, to confess their sins and transgressions in humble sorrow, yet with assured hope that genuine repentance will lead to mercy and pardon, and to recognize the sublime truth announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by a history that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord. The awful calamity of civil war which now desolates the land may be but a punishment inflicted upon us for our presumptuous sins, to the needful end of our national reformation as a whole people. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God that made us. We have grown in numbers, wealth, and power as no other nation has grown, but we have forgotten God." – (159 yrs ago)
b. A Lying Tongue
i. Sly Flattery, intentional deceit
The book "The Day America Told the Truth" (James Patterson & Peter Kim) reported that 91 percent of those surveyed lie routinely about matters they consider trivial, and 36 percent lie about important matters; 86 percent lie regularly to parents, 75 percent to friends, 73 percent to siblings, and 69 percent to spouses.
The story is told of a store manager who overheard his clerk telling a customer, "no, ma'am, we haven't had any for a while, and it doesn't look as if we'll be getting any soon." Horrified, the manager came running over to the customer and said, "of course we'll have some soon, we placed an order last week." Then the manager drew the clerk aside. "Never," he snarled, "Never, never, never say we're out of anything--say we've got it on order and it's coming. Now, what was it she wanted?" "Rain," said the clerk.
c. Hands that Shed innocent Blood
i. Murder, cruelty, violence inflicted
Abortion is shedding Innocent Blood: Over 93% for birth control, lifestyle convenience including financial reasons. Less than 1% because of incest, rape, or risk to mother. (What would Abe Lincoln say?)
d. A Heart that Devises Wicked Plans
i. Not the same as falling into temptation
ii. Intentional plan to commit a wrong act(s) against God and people (ISIS attacks, Suicide bombers, Drug cartels)
iii. Computer viruses
e. Feet that Run Rapidly to Evil
i. Having a way of always being in the wrong place at the right time.
ii. Not just yielding to temptation, but making a habit of committing a sin.
iii. Boasting that one is too bad for hell or that the devil trembles when one gets up in am.
f. A False, lying Witness
i. Falsely accuse or spread gossip
ii. (Pastor hurt by woman’s gossip leads her up to bell tower when she apologizes. He tears a pillow and lets the feathers fly)
iii. Share if you love Jesus posts on Facebook
g. One who spreads Strife among Brothers
i. “stir the pot” or instigate trouble
ii. Provoke disunity or dissention
iii. The opposite of one who seeks to sow peace in Christ.
III. Application: (What We Learn)
a. We fall to sin in small, imperceptible increments
i. Car going down the highway
IV. Conclusion:
a. God does not hate people. He hates SIN and the behavior that leads to sin.
b. If we find ourselves slipping almost imperceptibly into an act that God hates, there is hope.
1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
c. We can confess our sin and seek the Spirit’s power and guidance to adjust our path.
PRAYER
SONG: When It’s All Been Said and Done
Proverbs 6:16-19: There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him. 17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, 18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, 19 A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
