Session Twenty-nine: Future For The Faithful

1)    GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER

2)    READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 65:1-25
a)    What are your initial impressions?  Questions? Notable differences in translations?

3)    IN A NUTSHELL:
God scolds Israel for not being available when He came calling and then lists the sins that preoccupy them. God threatens to carry out the written threat to destroy Israel but backs off by promising to save a remnant. Still this means many people face disaster, and God will create a new, faithful people. Indeed, He will create a new heaven and a new earth, rejoicing over Jerusalem and delighting in His people. No evil will threaten the people in the new paradise.

4)    GOD IS NOT SILENT AGAINST SINFUL SACRIFICE: (65:1-7)
a)    (vv. 1-2) God calls but no one answers. (Romans 10:16-21)

b)    (vv. 3-5) They are arrogant in their rebellion.

c)    (vv. 6-7) They are punished for ignoring God and for their sinful practices.

5)    GOD HAS A REMNANT: (65:8-16)

b)    (vv. 11-12) Disobedient destined for destruction.
i)    Fortune (Gad) and Destiny (Meni) are pagan gods.

c)    (vv. 13-16) Contrasting God’s servants with those who forsake Him.

6)    THE PROMISE OF A NEW CREATION: (65:17-25)
a)    Sadness and weeping vanish to be replaced with joy, prosperity, and peace.
i)    See also Revelation 21:1-8

7)    READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 66:1-24
a)    What are your initial impressions?  Questions? Notable differences in translations?

8)    IN A NUTSHELL:
At home in heaven, God needs no earthly home built for Him. He simply wants humble, contrite people rather than evil people who delight in religious rituals. He will repay His enemies who trouble His faithful people but will miraculously multiply the faithful. He will be Jerusalem’s comforter, but will show fury to His foes. He will send His people to the far reaches of the world so all will know His glory. Thus all people will come to Jerusalem to worship the true God.

9)    RIGHTEOUS RITUAL RESTORED IN GOD’S WORD: (66:1-6)

a)    (vv. 7-9) Reversal of the curse of Eden (Genesis 3:16).

b)    (vv. 10-16) God will bring joy and judgment in the Messianic age.

11)    GOD OF ALL THE NATIONS: (66:17-25)
a)    (vv. 17-21) God glorified in Israel and Gentile Converts.

b)    (vv. 22-25) Eternal bliss for the righteous and eternal fire for the wicked.
