3)    IN A NUTSHELL:
God answers Israel’s complaints by breaking His silence and promising renewed greatness and glory for Israel. He calls Israel to prepare the way for nations to come to Jerusalem and worship, because God is making His people into a holy people. God comes from Edom in blood-stained clothes, showing He is already at work defeating the enemies and showing Himself mighty to save for Israel. The prophet gives Israel a lament in which they remember God’s great saving deeds of the past and how they grieved God’s Spirit, making Him their enemy. So Israel calls on God to quit hardening their hearts with the result that they did not walk in His ways. They ask Him to return to them and restore them as He did in the ancient past. Confessing their sins, Israel asks God not to be angry and to forgive their sins. They wonder if God will keep silent and keep punishing them.
