Session Twenty-four: Covenant of Comfort and Compassion

1)    GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER

2)    READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 54:1 – 55:13
a)    What are your initial impressions?  Questions? Notable differences in translations?  

3)    IN A NUTSHELL: 
God invites His abandoned wife to return and be fertile. The time of anger is over; compassion is the word of the day. Judgment is a thing of the past. God will rebuild their city and establish peace and righteousness. This will bring foreign nations scurrying to Israel as God calls people to seek Him while He may be found. Those who forsake their evil ways and turn to God will find pardon and mercy at no cost. Israel will escape captivity for God’s glory and honor.  

4)    A COVENANT OF COMFORT AND BLESSINGS: (54:1-17) 
a)    The Blessing of Salvation (chapters 54 - 56:8).
i)    To those in exile (chapter 54).

ii)    To those who hunger and thirst for Salvation (chapter 55).

iii)    To the Gentiles formerly restricted from coming (chapter 56:1-8).

b)    The Blessing of Growth (54:1-3)

5)    A COVENANT OF COMPASSION AND SALVATION: (55:1-13)
a)    The Grande Finale of the Salvation Oracles that started in Chapter 40.

b)    An Open Invitation  (55:1-5)
i)    Chapter 55 could be called, “Mission Accomplished!”
  
ii)    A Universal Call and Free Gift (vs. 1)

iii)    A Satisfying Life (vv. 2-3)

iv)    A Royal Covenant (vv. 4-5)

c)    An Urgent Imperative (55:6-9)
i)    Seek the Lord – He will not always be there

ii)    Turn from Unrighteous Deeds and Thoughts

iii)    God’s way is different from Humanity’s way

d)    The Fertile Word and An Everlasting Sign  (55:10-13)
i)    God’s Word is not void (John 1:1, 14; 2nd Timothy 3:16)

ii)    All Creation Sings

6)    APPLICATION:
a)    Thank God that even the most fearsome weapons of mankind are harmless against those whom He protects. (Psalm 91:1-6)

b)    Praise God that His Word is always fruitful. (Acts 13:47-48)

c)    Thank God for His Compassion and Saving Grace. (Ephesians 2:8-9)

7)    WRAP UP and CLOSE IN PRAYER
