Session Twenty-Two: Turning the Tables
1) GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER
2) READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 50:1 – 51:23
a) What are your initial impressions? Questions? Notable differences in translations?
3) IN A NUTSHELL:
God questions His people, explains that they suffer because of their sins, and reminds them of His saving acts in the past. Then the Servant testifies that He is strengthened in suffering because He knows God is near to help. He invites people in darkness to trust God and walk in His light. Otherwise they will face torment. Then God call his people to trust Him as did Abraham and Sarah. His justice will be a light to the nations, and His eternal salvation is on the way. The people should choose God’s righteousness and salvation instead of fearing human insults. Suddenly the call comes for God to bring salvation to the ransomed people of God who will return to Zion in triumphant singing and praising. God reminds His people that He is their only comforter, so they must not forget Him. The wakeup call comes for Jerusalem. They have suffered double for their sins and are filled with God’s wrath. Now God will take their suffering away from Jerusalem and turn the tables on her tormentors.
