Session Fifteen: In God’s Time
1) GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER
2) READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 34:1 – 35:10
a) What are your initial impressions? Questions? Notable differences in translations?
3) COMPLETE DISASTER and ETERNAL RESTORATION:
a) These two chapters mirror each other and are End Times prophesies.
b) What we read in these two chapters of Isaiah are further described (in greater detail) in Revelation 6:1-17; 19:1-3; 20:10-15; 21:1-8, 25-27; 22:1-6
c) The Four Horseman. (Sung by Glen Campbell, Show Me Your Way)
4) NATIONS CALLED TO CONDEMNATION: (Isaiah 34:1-17)
a) (vs. 1) The whole earth is a witness.
b) (vv. 2-4) Against the Nations a terrible Judgement awaits.
c) (vv. 5-15) Against Edom. The nation of Israel comes from Jacob. The nation of Edom comes from Jacob’s twin brother, Esau.
i) Genesis 25; 27:41-45; 32:3-8; 33:1-4; Num. 20:14-21; Deut. 2:4; Judges 11:17
ii) Edom has always taken advantage of Israel when Israel was weak or in need. (Psalm 137:7; Lamentations 4:22; Ezekiel 35:15; Obadiah 1)
iii) Edom’s is devoted to destruction. Their future is like Sodom and Gomorrah’s. (Jeremiah 49:7-22)
iv) The land of Edom will become a wilderness that even unclean animals will inhabit.
d) (vv. 16-17) Proof is in the Book of the Lord. What is Isaiah referring to?
i) A cross reference to Isaiah 13:21-22?
ii) A later author citing Isaiah’s former prophesy?
iii) God’s heavenly book? (Luke 10:20; Philippians 4:3; Revelation 3:5; 13:8; 20:12; 22:14,15)
iv) A point of reference for people to remember when it comes true?
5) THE RETURN OF THE REDEEMED (Isaiah 35:1-10):
a) From Wasteland to Garden (vv. 1-2)
b) From Weak to Strong, Lame to Leaping (vv. 3-6a)
c) From Drought to Delta (vv. 6b-7)
d) From Wilderness to Highway (vv.8-10)
e) While the Nations Rage. (Sung by Rich Mullins, Songs)
6) APPLICATION (Ben Witherington’s 7 points )
a) God is the God of Justice – some judgments are punitive and some are a call to repentance.
b) God hears the prayers of all the saints.
c) Sooner or later humans will be held accountable to God for their wicked actions.
d) There are urgencies on earth that can interrupt or silence the activities in heaven. This is a reflection of God’s compassion for His people.
e) Jesus Christ is in charge of the judgments and has them under control.
f) God will preserve His people’s spiritual life, even though they endure suffering and even martyrdom.
g) There are agents of God in heaven interceding for the saints or aiding their prayers or responding to them.
