Session Fourteen: The Lord Rises Up

1)    GATHERING and OPENING PRAYER

2)    READ / LISTEN to Isaiah 31:1 – 33:24
a)    What are your initial impressions?  Questions? Are there notable differences in various translations?

3)    THE WOE ORACLES
a)    Chapters 28-33 present six Woe oracles to various nations or individuals.
i)    28:1; 29:1, 15; 30:1; 31:1; and 33:1

4)    HUMAN HELPERS ARE HUMBLED (31:1-3):
a)    This is the fourth Woe, against those who trust in Egypt rather than God.

b)    Men and animals are no match for the power of God. All involved will be defeated.
 
5)    AID AGAINST ASSYRIA (31:4-9):
a)    The focus shifts to God’s protection over Jerusalem. Like a lion over its prey, or a hovering bird, God will prove to be Jerusalem’s protector.

b)     God is always faithful, despite the actions of His people

6)    MESSIANIC PROMISE (32:1-8):
a)    Hope and security from a future King.

b)    (vv. 4-5) There is a word play here with Fool and Noble. (Ecclesiastes 10:16-17)

c)    (vv. 6-8) The difference between a fool and a rogue with one who is noble.

d)    Even in the worst of times, God’s promise is secure.

7)    LAMENTING LADIES (32:9-14):
a)    Remember the warning to women from Isaiah 3:16 – 4:1.

b)    Observe the signs of the times to see God’s work in the world.

8)    THE SPIRIT SOWS PEACE (32:15-20):
a)    When God’s Spirit rules, peace – security – trust all follow.

b)    The promise of a Messianic age. God will pour His spirit on all flesh. (Joel 2:28-32)

9)    PETITION AND PRAISE (33:1-24):
a)    The sixth Woe – to the destroyer. Initially, Sennacherib under Hezekiah’s reign, but ultimately all nations who oppose God.

b)    (vv. 2-4) A cry to the Lord for help. 

c)    (vv. 5-6) Praise to the God of our Salvation. Zion’s treasure is the fear of the Lord.

d)    (vv. 7-9) The result of rebellion.

e)    (vv. 10-12) The Lord will rise up.

f)    (vv. 13-16) What does the Lord require? (Psalm 15 and 24; Micah 6:8)

g)    (vv. 17-20) A Glorious future.

h)    (vv. 21-24) The Lord of our Salvation, the Lord forgives.

10)    APPLICATION
a)    No matter how the political landscape looks, God is sovereign over the Nations of the world and He will reign forever. (Revelation 5:13)

b)    Those who continue to rebel against God until the very end will face eternal judgment. (Revelation 21:8)

c)    God is quick to forgive and redeem those who are repentant and turn back to Him.  (Psalm 32:5)
