Bad Hair Day
Judges 16:15-21 – Victory Fellowship

Our Biblical understanding of Samson is that he was famous for his great strength. In our lesson today we learn that his strength was in the fact that under a Nazirite vow he was never to cut his hair.
You ever have a bad hair day? We may spend more money on hair care products than any other part of our body. But think of all the things you can do to your hair—you can shampoo it, condition it, comb it, brush it, curl it, perm it, straighten it, relax it, crimp it, braid it, tease it, style it, color it, highlight it, gel it and mousse it. You can also loose it! Not to mention hair weavers, hair clips, and hair dryers.
O of the most common ways to poke fun at our President is the mention his hair.
When Tesia was born we wondered if she would ever get hair. Now it’s the same with granddaughter Gracie.
I used to tell people my son Erick lost his hair so I don’t have to.
Ella piggyback ride – “you’re bald, bald, bald!”
The power of hair.
We shouldn’t laugh at President Trump until we look at ourselves.
The last thing before we leave the house we check our---- hair.
If you don’t have a mirror you ask someone, “How’s my hair look?”
People debate what do with their hair—should I grow it, cut it, style it? We put a lot of thought into our hair. We have a brush in our vehicles so we can make final adjustments. I pull out the brush in my wife’s car just to hear her say, “o honey you’re beautiful.”
Anybody ever have a bad hair day or a bad haircut? What happens to you if you look in the mirror and your hair doesn’t look as good as you think it should?
What about a good hair day. Even if you don’t have plans to go out that day you go because you want people to see your hair. Isn’t it amazing how much power we give to our hair? We give away our power to the hair and let it affect how we feel or how we see ourselves and whether we feel confident or not.
So the story of Samson is not just about hair—it’s about how sometimes we give away our power—how sometimes we don’t use our strength and spiritual gifts in wise, responsible ways.
3 LESSONS SAMSON TEACHES ON HOW NOT TO LIVE LIFE:
1. Samson did not make wise use of the power God gave him.
We too are empowered by God. What ways can we use our power unwisely:
a. By giving away our power over to other people or circumstances.
b. BY acting selfishly and/or arrogantly with our power.
2. Samson did not remember who and Whose he was.
We must accept our spiritual responsibility and our identity in Christ.
3. Samson did not learn from his mistakes.
(You’d think after Delilah’s 3 attempts he’d wise up.)
It’s not all bad when we make mistakes unless we keep making the same ones over and over. We can learn from our mistakes!
We grow in faith and wisdom every day!
CONCLUSION: Ultimately true strength of character is about discipline, commitment and a willingness to learn.
This week when you’re in the store - check out all the shampoos and other hair care products on the shelf. As you stand in that ocean of hair care products let it be a reminder to yourself to ask yourself:
Am I giving my power away in life?
Am I using my power in wise and beneficial ways for my good and the good of others?
Am I learning from my mistakes?

Judges 16:15-21 NLT
15 Then Delilah pouted, “How can you tell me, ‘I love you,’ when you don’t share your secrets with me? You’ve made fun of me three times now, and you still haven’t told me what makes you so strong!” 16 She tormented him with her nagging day after day until he was sick to death of it. 17 Finally, Samson shared his secret with her. “My hair has never been cut,” he confessed, “for I was dedicated to God as a Nazirite from birth. If my head were shaved, my strength would leave me, and I would become as weak as anyone else.” 18 Delilah realized he had finally told her the truth, so she sent for the Philistine rulers. “Come back one more time,” she said, “for he has finally told me his secret.” So the Philistine rulers returned with the money in their hands. 19 Delilah lulled Samson to sleep with his head in her lap, and then she called in a man to shave off the seven locks of his hair. In this way she began to bring him down, and his strength left him. 20 Then she cried out, “Samson! The Philistines have come to capture you!” When he woke up, he thought, “I will do as before and shake myself free.” But he didn’t realize the Lord had left him. 21 So the Philistines captured him and gouged out his eyes. They took him to Gaza, where he was bound with bronze chains and forced to grind grain in the prison.
