The Book of Judges

Is it just me, or do you get the sense that in our world today everyone wants to do what is right in their own eyes. No one wants to be told they are wrong. No one wants to be held accountable for their actions. It seems that a higher allegiance is placed on political parties rather than the Word of God. As Solomon would say, "there is nothing new under the sun."

The Book of Judges describes Israel's chaotic period between Joshua and the first King of Israel, Saul (1350 - 1050 BC). This period in Israel’s history is noted by a recurring cycle of disobedience, foreign oppression, repentance, and finally, God’s rescue by lifting up judges. It highlights a downward spiral of moral decay, demonstrating that without trust in God, and faithful leadership, the people grew as corrupt as the Canaanites.

The Cycle of Sin in Judges: Israel falls into idolatry. God allows oppression. Israel cries out. God raises a judge to deliver them. Peace lasts until the judge dies.

The Judges become increasingly flawed over time, from righteous leaders (Othniel, Deborah), to compromised ones (Gideon, Samson).

The phrase "In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes." highlights the lack of spiritual and social order, concluding that Israel needed a godly king.
