CLASS TWENTY-EIGHT: The Crucifixion and Burial of Jesus

I.    ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS

II.    READ / LISTEN to MATTHEW 27:1–66
a.    What are your initial impressions or questions? Notable translation differences?

III.    Jesus Taken to Pilate – Judas Hangs Himself (vv. 1-10)
a.    All four Gospels record most of the events in this chapter and comparing all the details we get the fuller picture of what occurred.

b.    (vv. 1-2) Luke 23:1-2 records the charges they leveled against Jesus before Pilate.

c.    (vv. 3-4) Who should Judas have confessed his remorse to?

d.    (vv. 5-8) Only Matthew records Judas’ death in the Gospels. However, Luke does describe Judas’ death in Acts 1:16-19.

e.    (vv. 9-10) The prophesies fulfilled are a combination of Zechariah 11:12-13 and Jeremiah 32:6-9. The first prophesy describes Israel’s rejection of the True Shepherd, the low estimation of His life, and the destruction of Jerusalem by Rome. The second prophesy is a promise of God’s restoration of Israel after the Babylonian destruction. By merging these two prophesies, what is Matthew showing?

IV.    Jesus Before the Governor (vv. 11-14)
a.    John 18:33-38 records an expanded conversation between Jesus and Pilate.

b.    Luke 23:4-12 records Pilate sending Jesus to Herod and Herod sending Him back.

V.    The Crowd Chooses to Release Barabbas (vv. 15-26)
a.    The Mishnah Pesachim 8.6 (“Passover Festivals”) allowed for a Passover lamb to be sacrificed for one who would be released from prison during Passover.

b.    Mark 15:7 describes Barabbas as a murderous rebel.

c.    Ancient manuscripts of Matthew and some important leaders of the early church mention that Barabbas’s full name was Jesus Bar Abbus, the son of Rabbas, a renowned teacher.

d.    (vs. 19) What do you think caused the dream Pilate’s wife had?

e.    (vv. 20-23) Do you think most of the crowd knew why they were calling for Jesus to be crucified?

f.    (vs. 24-26) Is Pilate innocent of Jesus’ death? What about the crowd?
VI.    Jesus Mocked by the Soldiers (vv. 27-31)
a.    What would motive the soldiers to treat Jesus in this manner?

VII.    Jesus Crucified between Two Criminals (vv. 32-44)
a.    (vs. 32) Simon’s sons, Alexander and Rufus, evidently became leaders in the early church (Mark 15:21).

b.    Ray Boltz video, Watch the Lamb.

c.    (vs. 33) Why did they call it “The Place of the Skull?”

d.    (vs. 34) Why did Jesus refuse this drink?

e.    (vs. 35) Some manuscripts add, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. See John 19:24.

f.    (vv. 36-37) See also Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38; and John 19:19.

g.    (vv. 38-44) Everyone reviled Him. Luke 23:39-43 reports that one of the thieves was repentant.

VIII.    The Death of Jesus (vv. 45-56)
a.    (vv. 45-49) Jesus is quoting Psalm 22:1. I believe Jesus had in mind the entire Psalm when He cried out.

b.    (vv. 50-54) When considering the accounts of all the Gospels, Jesus’ death on the cross was accompanied by six miraculous events that lead to the concluding evidence of His Resurrection:
1.
1) The Miraculous Darkness; 2) The Tearing of the Temple Curtain;
3) The Miraculous Earthquake; 4) The Miracle of Opened Graves;
5) Jesus’ Undisturbed Grave Clothes; 6) Revivals to Life in the Calvary Graveyard

c.    (vv. 55-56) The women watched from a distance.

IX.    The Burial of Jesus (vv. 57-61)
a.    Compare with Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:50-56; John 19:38-42

X.    The Closely Guarded Tomb (vv. 62-66)
a.    Why was it important to secure the Tomb?

XI.    Application
a.    We can be sorry for our actions but we must confess our sin to Jesus and seek His forgiveness. (1 John 1:9; Romans 6:23)

b.    We have all, as a result of our sin, contributed to the death of Jesus. (Romans 3:23; 4:25)

c.    Jesus was in control of the events leading up to and during His arrest, trial, punishment, crucifixion, time of death, and His Resurrection. (Luke 24:44-48)
