CLASS SEVEN: Sermon on the Mount – Part 2

I.    ANNOUNCEMENTS and PRAYER CONCERNS

II.    READ / LISTEN to MATTHEW 6:1–34
a.    What are your initial impressions or questions? Notable translation differences?

III.    How to Give (6:1-4)
a.    How do you reconcile verse 1 with 5:14-16?

b.    The Greek word for hypocrite, hupokrites, means an actor wearing a mask and portraying someone they are not.

c.    Giving donations in the shofar box.

d.    How can we give and not let our right hand know what the left hand is doing?

e.    How do you think God rewards the person who gives appropriately?

IV.    How to Pray (6:5-8)
a.    How are the hypocrite’s prayers rewarded?

b.    What is the benefit of private prayer?

c.    What is meant by “meaningless repetition” or “babble?”

V.    The Disciple’s Prayer (6:9-15)
a.    The Lord gave this prayer as a model for His disciples to pray.

b.    However, it is NOT “meaningless repetition” or “babble” so it is entirely appropriate to pray this prayer verbatim. You are, in fact, reciting scripture.

c.    (Breakdown of the Lord’s Prayer)

d.    The Greek word for “debt,” opheilema, is used only here and in Romans 4:4 in the NT. (Luke uses hamartia = sin.) What’s the difference between debts, trespasses, and sins?

e.    Compare this prayer with Luke 11:2-4. The closing doxology in Matthew’s version is not found in all the ancient manuscripts. Most likely, the early church added it to praise God.

VI.    How to Fast (6:16-18)
a.    What is the main point of these 3 verses?

VII.    Heavenly Treasure (6:19-24)
a.    What kind of treasure can we store up in heaven?

b.    What does Jesus mean by “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also?”

c.    In your own words, what is Jesus saying in vv. 22-23?

d.    How can money and possessions cause us to despise God?

VIII.    Don’t Worry, Be Happy (6:25-34)
a.    In verse 25, what is the greater thing and what is the lesser?

b.    In Verse 26, what is the greater thing and what is the lesser?

c.    In verses 27-30, what is the greater thing and what is the lesser?

d.    (vs. 30) What is the source of worry?

e.    (vv. 31-32) What does Jesus equate worrying about food, drink, and clothing with?

f.    (vv. 33-34) What is a disciple of Jesus to do instead?

IX.    Application
a.    God is not concerned with the amount of our giving as much as the motive for our giving. (Mark 12:41-44)

b.    We demonstrate to God that we understand just how He has forgiven us in the way that we offer forgiveness to others. (Ephesians 4:32)

c.    We should not get distracted by worldly cares and concerns but rather seek to serve God with all our heart, mind, body, spirit, and possessions. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
