III.    THE ACTS of PAUL:
a.    Review Paul’s Early Travels from handout

b.    The Antioch Commission (13:1-3)
•    Diverse group of Prophets and Teachers
•    Barnabus and Saul - Spirit directed and called for special work
•    What 4 things does the church do for Barnabus & Saul? 

IV.    The First Missionary Journey (13:4-52):
a.    At Cyprus – See the map handout (vv. 4-12)
•    Mission Strategy Emerges – John along for the ride
•    Witness to a Proconsul brings spiritual opposition from magician
•    No longer will Luke use “Saul”. It’s now “Paul” (His Roman Name)
•    Not a “son of salvation” but a “son of the devil”
•    A converted proconsul 

b.    At Perga and Pisidian Antioch (vv. 13-52) 
•    John Mark goes back home (possible reasons? Gal. 4:13-14)
•    At Antioch, Paul enters the synagogue and preaches. 
•    Elements of a Creed in Paul’s message vv. 16-41 (1 Corinth 15:1-11)
1.    Jesus was Crucified (died)
2.    Jesus was buried (in a tomb)
3.    God raised Jesus from the dead
4.    Jesus was seen resurrected by many witnesses

c.    Antioch Continued…
•    Come back next week (vv. 42-43)!
•    Jealous Jews. Light to the Gentiles (vv. 44-48). 
•    Incite prominent women (vv. 49-50).
•    Shake the dust (51-52). (Luke 10:10-12)

V.    Read / Listen / Discuss ACTS 14:1-28
a.    Discuss initial impressions & translation differences
VI.    The Journey Continues (14:1-28):
a.    Iconium (14:1-6)
•    Same strategy
•    Trouble-maker Jews divide the city
•    vv. 3-7. Escape the stoning (for now)

b.    At Lystra and Derbe (vv. 7-20)
•    Healing (vv. 7-10)
•    The god-makers (vv. 11-13)
•    Zeus (Jupiter), Hermes (Mercury). Philemon and Baucis were a poor, pious elderly couple in Phrygia who alone show kindness to disguised gods Zeus/Jupiter and Hermes/Mercury. After feeding them, their hut becomes a temple, and they are rewarded with intertwined life as trees.
•    Paul’s message not on theology, but general revelation (vv. 14-18)    (See 1 Corinthians 9:19ff)
•    Left for dead (vs. 19) See 2nd Corinthians 12:2-4
•    The next day leave for Derbe (vs. 20)

c.    Return Back the Way they Came (vv. 21-28)
•    Review the trip on the handout map travels sheet
•    Remember Paul’s Journey’s – PACER
•    When back in Antioch, Paul most likely wrote his first letter to the churches. The book of Galatians. (See handout on Paul’s letters) 

VII.    APPLICATION
•    When the Gospel is proclaimed, those whom God has been calling will respond.
•    When the Gospel is proclaimed, there will be those who are offended.
•    Like the Christians at Antioch, we should be globally focused.
•    The Gospel emphasizes God’s grace, and confronts evil and darkness.
•    The gospel builds on the basics of common grace and natural, or general, revelation.
