A. You may recall that the Apostle Peter's audience in the early 60's A.D. was being severely persecuted for their faith. The Holy Spirit inspired Peter to share encouragement with them (and us) for how to live out our faith in such an environment. I have been sharing insight from Peter's letter to the churches in Northern Asia Minor. As Peter relates, there is hope of a better home awaiting - this world is not our home.
B. In his letter to the churches in Asia, Peter encourages having a perspective with the end in view. He was most likely present at Jesus’ ascension recorded in the book of Acts.
a. Peter writes, “The end of the world is coming soon. Therefore”
b. In light of their current situation of suffering and persecution Peter wants the church to pray with passion, love without limits, and gladly serve God by serving others.
C. Pray with Passion: be earnest and disciplined in your prayers.
D. Love without Limits: Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.
a. Love in word and deed
E. Gladly Serve God by Serving Others: God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies.
F. The consequence of the church praying with passion, loving without limits, and gladly serving God by serving others is that, everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! Amen.
G. Jesus will come again. As Christians we are to live life in all circumstances with the end in sight. This is not our home - there is more to the story. Do you know Jesus today?
