Living Water
John 4:7-14 – Victory Fellowship
May 30, 2021 - Rev. Roderick Grabski

INTRODUCTION:
What would you do if you met Jesus “in the flesh?”
-would you be concerned with how you look, how you act, the friends you have, how much money you have, or the job you do or don’t have?

Would we be afraid Jesus wouldn’t want to spend time with us if he knew who we really are?

This woman at the well didn’t have a choice about meeting Jesus – He was there when she got there.

RELATING THE TEXT:
She must have felt like she had 3 strikes against her when Jesus asked her for a drink – and this was even before she found out He was the Messiah.
#1 She was a Samaritan (half-breed). Jesus was a Jew
#2 She was out at noon (not am or pm when cooler). She had “issues”
#3 She was spiritually thirsty. (Married 5 times before but not currently)
She was looking for something in a man that only God could give her.
Jesus offers her something that only God can deliver. He is the messiah.
Psalm 36 (our call to Worship) refers to God as the “fountain of life.”
Jesus wasn’t talking about physical thirst – He was talking about Spiritual thirst.

APPLICATION:
Our dog ELI crossed the rainbow bridge on Nov. 9, 2020. I used to keep a gallon of water in my Jeep because he got thirsty. I always had to give him water because he thirsted every day.
We watch mostly sports on tv. Consequently we see a lot of beer commercials. (Dos XX – “Stay thirsty my friend”)

Like Eli’s continual thirst, and what the beer commercial suggests – the ways of this world would have us stay thirsty spiritually as well.

But Jesus the Messiah wants to quench our thirst with living water.
No matter what strikes are against us.
No matter our race, social status, reputation, past or present sin –
Jesus is the living water that gives eternal, thirst-quenching life!

We drink water to contain our physical thirst - we quench our
Spiritual thirst in our hearts through our relationship with Christ.

CONCLUSION:
The woman at the well shared her faith -28 So the woman left her waterpot, and went into the city, and *said to the men, 29 "Come, see a man who told me all the things that I have done; this is not the Christ, is it?"30 They went out of the city, and were coming to Him.

We have a great opportunity as the congregation called Victory Fellowship. God can and will do great things with and through us!

But only if we take care of two things:
First, we must make sure our thirsty souls are quenched.

Second, we must be willing to use our time and resources to show others how to quench their thirsty souls. We take our experience of God, of the way we love Jesus, and we share it.

SONG: Loving My Jesus

John 4:7-14 (NLT) 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
